Today is a slow news day and by slow we're talking so sssssssssllllllllllloooooooo (that I can't even be bothered to finish that) that I'm writing about this...

Samsung's 'SpinPoint S166' line of ultra silent 3.5in hard drives.

Yes, it's moving parts
Yes, anything non-flash is sooooooo.. (let's not start that again) last millennium
Yes, it's not that interesting

The reason: because by 'ultra silent' what the company means is the range operates at 24dB idle and 27.5dB when accessing. This is nice, but given that modern hard drives only operate at around three to four decibels more and given that it is virtually impossible to hear anything under 28dB and virtually impossible to hear anything a few decibels over 28dB we'll not pull out the party hats for now. After all, how much quieter can 'ultra silent' be over... err... silent?

80GB and 160GB capacities of the SpinPoint S166 line will be made available and boast the usual 8MB cache and 3Gbps SATA connection. They do spin at a nippy 7,200rpm which is kinda noteworthy-ish (though not really for a desktop part).

No prices, no dates. It's just one of those days. Ho-hum *twiddles fingers, goes to sleep*

Update: *wakes* we'll see them this month.... hooray *sleeps*
