Back in January SanDisk greatly impressed Riyad with its new 1.8in ultraportable 32GB solid state hard drive (SSD) at CES. It had two shortcomings however, both of which have now been addressed.

The first of these is that a new 2.5in version has been announced to offer a solution which is compatible with all major mainstream notebooks. The second is that this version comes with SATA connectivity – the defacto interface for modern laptop drives.

If this weren't enough, this second drive – christened, rather logically, the 'SATA 5000 2.5in'– is now being shipped to manufacturers so they can offer it as an option for any notebook in their range. Of course, the big question however is when will these drives be sold standalone so the rest of us can upgrade our existing laptops without having to buy a new one?

That said, the attraction of grabbing a new notebook with a SanDisk SSD is undeniable. The company quotes incredible reliability (two million hours mean time between failures), stunning performance (67MBps read rate, 0.11ms data access, 100x faster data transfer than a moving parts HDD) and substantial power savings (0.9 watts SDD v 1.9 watts HDD). SSDs are also completely silent and remain cool.

SanDisk revealed that the SATA 5000 2.5in will be priced at a very reasonable $350 in large volume orders for computer manufacturers. A short, agonising wait will ensue before we know how that affects us...
