Just six weeks ago Fujitsu was crowing about a major advance in hard drive technology and already it looks to have delivered on that claim.


While Toshiba still holds the capacity crown with the 4,200RPM 200GB 'MK2035GSS', Fujitsu's MHW2160BJ (above) attains a capacious silver at 160GB while rocketing performance up to 7,200RPM. I don't know about you – but I'd rather have that performance than an extra 40GB any day...

Fujitsu claims this rotational rocket is capable of data transmission speeds of up to 300MBps – an industry first, helped by its SATA 3.0 interface. Furthermore the acoustic noise level is just 2.5 bels at idle meaning you won't pay for this zip with your hearing while power consumption is a mere 2.3 watts or less when reading or writing data.

The MHW2160BJ will be the flagship of a new series of MHW2 BJ drives which match the 160GBer's performance at incrementally lower capacities. All will be available by the end of May and though pricing remains a mystery expect Dell XPS, Alienware and VoodooPC notebooks to be lapping these up from day one.

On a related issue, I can't help but think that while Fujitsu's announcement may be a red letter day for moving parts hard drives capacity increases using this technology seem snail-like at best. SSDs are catching up fast and in 12 months time I doubt many of us will want our laptop storage on something that spins...
