For those with good memories you may remember SimpleTech’s 128GB solid state hard disk that debuted waaaaaay back in March 2005? Well, finally someone has topped it.

Nearly two years later a new capacity king sits atop the SSD market with Adtron’s 160GB 2.5in drive offering serious storage potential for laptop owners.

Dubbed the ‘Flashpak x25FB’ it comes in both IDE (I25FB) and SATA (A25FB) variants with the former racing along at an impressive 70MBps read and 60MBps write and the later not far behind at 65MBps read and 55MBps write. The two models also ship with the company’s ‘EraSure Clear’ and ‘Sanitize’ software which enables government standard data deletion.

Why would a 2.5in laptop drive come with such hardcore tools? Because its (undisclosed) pricing means it is targeting corporate business and all interested parties must contact Adtron directly. Word on the grapevine is that translates to somewhere between $13,000 and $16,000 dollars per unit! Still, if you think that is scary think back to SimpleTech... its 128GB Zeus SSD had an RRP of $50,000 (though discounts were available for bulk orders!) so technology is clearly marching on.

Looks like 32GB is (unfortunately) going to remain the consumer SSD sweet spot for a few more months yet then...
