As technology races forward with ever faster, ever cheaper advancements many formerly innovative products drop by the wayside and the floppy disc finally looks set to join them.

The venerable 2.5 incher has been teetering on the brink of extinction for some time now but monster UK retailer PC World gave it a sharp shove yesterday by announcing it will not be replenishing stocks.

The company – fairly – blames the widespread adoption of CDs, DVDs and memory keys for the media’s decline and says worldwide sales have plummeted to just 700 million. That compares to in excess of two billion in 1998. Furthermore PC World says it is unlikely to sell desktops or laptops with floppy drives from the summer.

Ultimately, the move was inevitable because other than the infamous Windows Boot Disc it is fair to say most of us have had very little use for floppy discs for a few years now. In fact searching the PC World site for ’floppy disk’ brings up just two batches: one from Essen Valu (?) and one from Imation. An external floppy disk drive also makes an appearance sporting a USB2.0 connection!?!

So if floppies are your thing (I sound like spam email) you’ll have to move quick. That said, if you still use floppies then moving quickly is clearly not part of your make-up... see what I did there?!
