The average hard drive is about as exciting as Pop Idol but what about the world’s fastest hard drive? A Pop Idol quarter final?

Joking apart (because self cannibalism is more entertaining than Pop Idol) the announcement of Seagate’s ‘Savvio 15K’ 2.5in HDD does mean that laptop storage will no longer play second fiddle to its larger desktop brothers.

The new Savvio’s 15,000RPM spin speed is a first in this form factor and it matches the very best 3.5in desktop hard drives. In fact – with a 2.9ms data access time – the Savvio is actually the fastest moving parts HDD on the planet. This isn’t the only place where the Savvio scores points however since Seagate points out that the average desktop HDD consumes 8.4W of power when idle and this device uses just 5.8W. Good news for laptops.

Or so you’d think…

Surprisingly Seagate says it will initially target laptops with the Savvio 15K but instead provide it in 36GB and 73GB capacities for servers. HP’s ProLiant range will be the first to benefit but I’m sure Alienware, VoodooPC and Dell’s XPS team are already hot on the case…
