The headline and photography say it all really, but there’s more to this mini monster than just size…

Kingmax – maker of the nigh-legendary [linkout: Super Stick] – has become the world’s first company to announce a 4GB microSDHC card. It is manufactured using Samsung’s 63nm and (for the moment at least) offers twice the capacity of its rivals.

Perhaps just an important as this storage jump however is the performance of the Kingmax card since it uses Silicon Motion’s SMI 268 controller (a flash memory controller made from the 0.18um process technology - for the geeks amongst you). This enables the little 4GBer to support dual channel read speeds right up to 22.5MBps (150x) and read speeds of up to 127x (19.1MBps).

Interestingly, screaming performance like this makes the card fast enough to work well with digital cameras not just mobile phones and – as compact digicams get ever thinner – its space saving format could convince manufacturers to slowly move away from SD.

We don’t have pricing or a release date for this lightening massive midget yet but I know I when I want to see the first malnourished digital cameras that use it… NOW! NOW! NOW!
