As the pioneer of one of the world’s two next generation medias, you’d like to think Sony’s first Blu-ray PC drive would do what people wanted most: playback Blu-ray movies, but it didn’t. Now it does.

The (essential) functionality boost comes after the company this week announced the availability of a free Blu-ray movie player software update for its BWU-100A PC disc drive. The Cyberlink PowerDVD developed tweak is available from the Sony Storage Website along with multi-language download instructions and enables the playback of commercial Blu-ray movies (BD-ROMs) as well as personally created Blu-ray content.

"With backward compatibility with all major DVD and CD formats, the BWU-100A is already one of the most fully-featured drives on the market. With the addition of Blu-ray movie playback, customers have another reason to upgrade their PC drive and begin enjoying the visual benefits of HD content," said Christoph Cyrol, Product Marketing Manager in Sony Europe's IT Peripherals division. Elsewhere the drive remains unaltered meaning it can write to BD-R and BD-RE media at 2x (50 mins per single layer disc) and it is backwards compatible with DVDs and CDs. If you have the cash to meet the $750 RRP the BWU-100A suddenly became a rather good bet. If you’d shelled out already your blushes have just been spared…
