If you read my article in July about Vista’s intriguing ‘ReadyBoost’ feature then you may wish there was a more affordable solution than a solid state hard drive. Super Talent agrees with you.

The Californian based company has come up with a new range of ReadyBoost memory keys which it has designed and tested specifically to support this exciting technology. Ok, ok, enough already. You can’t be bothered to click back and read just what Vista ReadyBoost is, I get it. Here’s a recap for the cheap seats:

Essentially Vista introduces a new concept in adding memory into a system and Windows ReadyBoost enables you to use a removable flash drive to improve system performance without the bother of opening your chassis to upgrade system memory.

Now the introduction of flash memory into any system is a major plus since the OS can take advantage of its extremely fast access times to cache regularly accessed data. For instance a traditional HDD can service about 100 to 200 requests per second. An SSD can potentially handle up to 5,000.

Without going into detail Super Talent says its ReadyBoost drives can automatically encrypt Vista data stored on the drive when they are removed from the system and meet Microsoft’s minimum performance requirements (something Gates’ boys haven’t publicly disclosed).

Mysteries aside the company will serve up 1GB and 2GB ‘USB ReadyBoost drives’ for just $29 and $59 so there isn’t much risk involved. Whether they offer anything significantly more than using a regular USB flash memory key however is something for our lab boys to be bored challenged by.
