In June we saw the first SDHC cards hit the market and though it remains a ridiculously under publicised format (it isn’t compatible with standard SD card readers/devices - opps!) it does allow for far greater capacities and sizeable jumps in performance. All of which means we shouldn’t be too surprised now miniSD has jumped on the bandwagon.

In a predictable piece of branding the ‘miniSDHC’ card is now officially in existence and it is Transcend we have to thank for making our lives that little bit more complicated. In truth SanDisk referenced the format back in September in conjunction with the announcement of its V-Mate video converter but I’ve seen nothing solid since.

So now in strolls Transcend with a 4GB miniSDHC offering class two performance: a minimum of 2MBps data transfer rate. Clearly this should be a big boost for mobile phone owners… though as far as I know there isn’t a single handset available yet which supports the format. This shouldn’t put a downer on things too much however since the cards themselves aren’t scheduled to arrive until the new year and by then I’m sure there’ll be mountains of mobiles eager to swallow these things up.

Until then the bundled SDHC adaptor is going to come in rather useful…
