We’ve seen our fair share of tough and secure memory keys pass through this office but not many tough and secure memories to match this one.

The ‘DataTraveler Secure’ from Kingston is a new line of durable, waterproof USB2.0 flash drives featuring hardware based encryption to safeguard critical data.

We not talking empty marketing talk here either since by ‘waterproof’ what Kingston means is a product which has a titanium coated stainless steel casing and conforms to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60529 IPX8 standard to protect against water damage to depths of up to four feet.

Likewise, data protection is equally hardcore via a 256bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) hardware-based encryption which enables information to be encrypted and decrypted by authorised users, without the need for special software. As for data transfer rates, they aren’t the fastest we have seen but at 24MBps read and 10MBps write they are certainly towards the top end of the market.

At 77.9mm x 22.2mm x 12.05mm there is a slight size penalty for all these features but they remain extremely pocket friendly and capacities range from 512MB to 4GB. Prices do reflect the additional tech onboard with 512MB, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB setting you back £24, £37, £65 and £147 respectively and that’s without VAT.

Still, if you want a memory key that’s secure and capable of surviving the attentions of even the most butter-fingered of owners then I can see a beautiful friendship.
