The first dual layer Blu-ray movies have finally been announced and they will come from an unsurprising source.

Blu-ray daddy Sony has officially confirmed Click starring comedic antichrist Adam Sandler, Ridley Scott’s engrossing Black Hawk Down and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (kill me now) will be the breakthrough trio debuting in October, November and December respectively.

Unlike HD DVD, which encodes its movies using either VC-1 or Mpeg4, Blu-ray (mystifyingly) uses the less efficient Mpeg2 making its need for 50GB discs all the more pressing. So how will this additional capacity be gobbled up… by boatloads of high definition extras of course.

Amongst them Black Hawk Down - easily the best title of the bunch - has the most interesting features including something it calls ‘Blu-wizard’ which is loosely described as a “unique playlist technology which lets consumers customise the way they watch special features”. I’m thinking interactive-menu-while-watching-the-movie. There’s also the usual featurettes coupled with director and star audio commentaries along with one from the US Special Forces Veterans ’93 which should be well worth a listen.

As for the other two, if you really must indulge the flaccid comedy of the aforementioned Sandler and the nauseating Will Ferrell then you’ll also get director and ‘star’ commentaries and featurettes with titles such as “Humping Dogs” and “Sp-Sp-Spit It Out” in the case of Click and “Little Sticker on Windshield”, “I’m Hot” and “Cal Calls Ricky” in Talladega Nights.

Much as I’d like to see BHD in all its glory, the other two remind me why I’m so glad I took a 12 month pledge of High Definition abstinence.
