A little more than two months ago the first 4GB SD Cards started shipping, but with the arrival of SDHC it appears we are in for some pretty quick capacity jumps.

Announced at the death knell of last week were the first 8GB SDHC cards coming from Pretec and Transcend (the former won by a nose). To see the format max double so quickly suggests the backwards incompatible standard, which boasts a theoretical limit of 2TB, could be worth the upgrade.

No performance info is available yet on Transcend’s offering but we do know the Pretec is greased lightening with access speeds of 20MBps, a transfer rate which does justice to the epic storage capacity. All we can say about Transcend is that being SDHC it guarantees to work at nothing less than 2MBps but I’m sure the company has come up with something a little quicker than that.

Likewise there are no price or release details available for the Transcend but Pretec’s eight gigger is immediately available in limited quantities with mass production scheduled for November and December. It carries an RRP of $299 and appears to be well worth the outlay if your pockets are of sufficient depth.
