While I’m not convinced optical media is the future for high definition content (ironically, neither is Sony), TDK has shown there is still room for some innovation.

As with CDs and DVDs, the first mini Blu-ray disc has been shown off at CEATEC 2006 (picture courtesy of NewLaunches.com) and it measures just 8cm in diameter yet manages to squeeze in 16.5GB of storage. Writeable and re-writeable versions are being developed and they are being targeted primarily for use in portable devices like HD camcorders.

Currently TDK has only developed single layer versions of these dinky discs but it has plans afoot to create dual layer 33GB versions. Either way, both boast higher capacities than their HD DVD single and dual layer full size equivalents and will play in standard Blu-ray drives.

Whether these new discs will be enough to give Blu-ray a boost over HD DVD or sweeten the prospect of yet another format war is open to debate. Personally, I can’t really see the point in storage with great big empty holes in the middle anymore…
