There may only be a small proportion of laptops on the market which are powerful enough to play full screen high definition media, but that hasn’t stopped Toshiba unveiling the world’s first HD DVD burner to fit them.

The SD-L902A is just 12.7mm tall and incorporates a blue-violet laser which enables it to read from and write to HD DVD-R discs and access HD DVD-ROMs. The drive is also backwards compatible with existing DVD and CD formats.
Predictably for a first generation device operation is not particularly fast with the SD-L902A utilising an 8MB buffer to burn at speeds of 1x to HD DVD-R, 2x to DVD-R DL, 2.4x to DVD+R, 4x to DVD±R and DVD±RW, 3x to DVD-RAM, 16x to CD-R, and 10x to CD-RW. The drive will be given its world premiere today at CEATEC Japan 2006, an event which runs until 7 October.
No pricing has been revealed at this stage (not even a bracket) but Toshiba does aim to commence limited shipments of the SD-L902A before the end of the year.
