Memory keys, if I can’t have em small I want em big and they don’t come any bigger than Toshiba’s latest…

Announced just ahead of IFA (which yours truly will jetting off to tomorrow afternoon), the TransMemory line is available in incremental sizes up to a monster 16GB. Furthermore it will be U3 compatible and – possibly for the first time – offer a genuine alternative to an external hard drive.

U3, for the gallionth time, is a standard jointly developed by SanDisk and M-System (who the former bought outright last month for $1.55bn) which enables programmes and user configurations to be run directly from a memory key. All trackable data (cookies, web history, etc) is kept on the key and removing it from a computer eliminates all traces of your use. Sandra wrote a longer piece about the technology here.

Ok, history lesson over, what else do we know? In truth, very little. Data transfer rates, weight, dimensions and – importantly – price won’t be unveiled until the show itself though a November release date is scheduled. I’ll potter on over and see if I can’t find out a few more details vonce I spveak in my vest German accent.
