SanDisk 2GB MicroSDs & $1.55bn Acquisition

In a busy day for SanDisk, the ambitious maker of all things flash has doubled the capacity of its smallest format and shelled out a king’s ransom to snaffle up an industry rival.

Technology first and despite the long term market dominance of SD, undoubtedly the hottest flash memory format right now is MicroSD. The industry’s smallest form factor has become a runaway hit on mobile platforms like handsets and PDAs and has now received a considerable capacity boast.

As from August the cards will now be available in sizes up to a hefty 2GB, which means they’re not far from eating at the big boy’s table with the rest of the regular formats. Upwards of 1,000 tracks should now fit on the fingernail sized form factor and at just $99.99 it doesn’t cost the earth either. An SD adaptor ships with all SanDisk’s microSD cards and this should sell like hot cakes.

Also making waves is the company’s takeover of M Systems, a company which was at the forefront of the U3 ‘computer on a stick’ technology introduced last year. A massive $1.55bn fee (paid entirely out of stock) has been announced and though I’m not too sure coughing up almost as much as Lenovo did for IBM’s entire PC division represents the best value for money ever SanDisk has shown a pretty keen eye for expansion in recent years.
