What follows three? Four of course, or as SanDisk prefers…IV. Yup, it’s a new set of Roman Numerals for a new line of Extreme CompactFlash (CF) cards from the flash memory behemoth. Available in two, four and 8GB capacities the new cards have a claimed minimum read and write speed of 40MB/sec currently making these “the fastest cards in the world”, according to Tanya Chuang, SanDisk’s Senior Retail Product Marketing Manager.

That said, many of us are unlikely to see these kinds of speeds when transferring images with our bog-standard card readers. So to address this issue of compatibility SanDisk has simultaneously launched its Extreme FireWire reader. Use the new cards with the new reader (and a FireWire 800-enabled system) and your card-to-computer image transfer rates should nudge 40MB/sec (or 20MB/sec for FireWire 400). Good news if your “copying” progress bar is lengthening at a rate that makes drying paint look fast.

For a limited time, the company is also offering an introductory bundle pack that includes a 4GB SanDisk Extreme IV CompactFlash card and the SanDisk Extreme FireWire reader (with cables). The price for that is yet to be finalised, but you’re looking at RRPs of £35.25 (including VAT) for the Extreme FireWire reader and £105.75, £205.63 and £399.50 for the 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB Extreme IV cards, respectively.

Other Extreme IV features include rugged construction, updated firmware/controller technology, an operating temperature that covers -25C to 85C, and a free 30-day trial version of Adobe Photoshop CS2 if you live in the US or Europe.

Look out for a review soon, but in the meantime let’s guess the name of the next Extreme cards? Hmm, what follows four...?
