Samsung Readies 8Gb Nand Modules

Something very technical has happened from which non-techies are set to benefit: Samsung has just unveiled 8Gb nand memory modules.

To explain, nand is like the building blocks for all flash memory. It is contained – in differing arrangements – inside everything from memory cards to mobile phones, MP3 players to even laptops. So increase the storage density of a nand module and everything else can get larger too and that, my friends, is exactly what Samsung has done.

Its new modules are fabricated at 60nm which – much like CPUs – helps to reduce power consumption and increase performance, or in this case: capacity. Consequently the latest nand chips are up to 8Gb (equal to 1GB) and can be easily arranged into two layers of four. Do the basic maths and you’ll spot this means 8GB ultra portable devices will soon be in our grasp. How soon? Samsung is targeting mass Q3 availability so anytime over the next couple of months.

Given all the widespread speculation about impending 8GB nanos, Sansas and Walkmans this development appears to be bang on course. Whether it remains bang on course with our budgets however will be another question entirely.
