In an announcement sure to shake your geeky hearts to their very core Sony has stunned the world by increasing the capacity of its MemoryStick Pro Duo cards to 4GB .

Currently typing one handed (so I can use the other to keep jabbing myself in the eye with my trusty repelling pencil to stay awake) I can inform you that the latest utterly inevitable upgrade provides a 100 per cent capacity increase over the previous 2GB top dog.

Possibly more interesting than this (though barely) is the fact Sony will now bundle the card with an adaptor so it can fit standard MemoryStick slots which means death to third parties who – until now – counted the cash providing solutions to the company’s lazy oversight.

As for performance the new 4GBer promises a minimum write speed of 15Mbps which, to be frank, is starting to get a little ludicrous when you’re chucking this much data around. At least the price (£118) and warranty (five years) will make it highly competitive when it ships inside the next six weeks.

In the meantime I’ll get back to stabbing my eye with that repelling pencil in the hope the IT gods will respect my sacrifice and see fit not to strand me again with another such slow news morning…
