Sony Readies 1.5g Micro Vault Tinys

A question that often occurs to me when dealing with portable products is when do they become too small to be functional? Sure we may have more pocket space but will a VGA resolution really be a good idea on a 1.8in screen, aren’t the keys on a smart phone already more suited to children than adults, and when is a memory key so teeny it is simply begging to be lost within minutes of ownership?

The answer is when it’s the Sony ‘Micro Vault Tiny’, a new line from the King of Proprietary which measures a meagre 30 x 14.5 x 2.7mm and weighs just 1.5g. Despite their microscopic dimensions however the range are still equipped with USB2.0 connectivity and – as you can plainly see – come in a range of hallucinogenic colours that signify capacities from 256MB to a proportionately impressive two gigabytes.

Less inspiring are the truly hideous cases that Sony is trying to bundle with the Tinys which look like clamshell mobile phones on Acid. They also add a significant amount of bulk to a product whose designers clearly lost many months of sleep trying to shave every angstrom from its body. It’s like Stephen Hawking sweated over the technology and Trinny and Susannah turned up for an hour to style it.

The Tinys go on sale in the Far East and US this month with Europe expected to bow to peer pressure next month. Thankfully with prices starting from just $30 for the 256MB model and only increasing to a mere $124 for the 2GBer you can probably afford to lose to a few of them down the back of the sofa.

Update:
Yup, Kingmax did indeed make a memory key last year called the Super Stick which measured only 39 x 12 x 2mm but it weighed a monstrous 5g and we all know what damage an extra 3.5g can do to a pocket lining…
