Samsung Lauches First Blu-ray Player

It was back in March whilst attending the annual Hannover loony-fest more commonly known as CeBIT that I first set eyes on Samsung’s BD-P1000. The company was telling every journo who’d listen that the world would get its mitts on them in September but I guess the R&D lab rats were whipped a little harder than usual because its here now.

Of course by ‘whipped’ I mean flogged with an inch of their lives and by ‘here’ I mean America but as far as I know this is the first Blu-ray player to hit the West and a European launch date shouldn’t be far behind.

Little has changed with the retail BD-P1000 in comparison with what I saw in World Cup land since Blu-ray playback still capable at native 1080p, 1080i and 720p resolutions. DVDs and CDs remain compatible along with Mpeg2, VC-1, H.264, MP3 and Jpeg decoding. HDMI, Component, S-Video and Composite video outputs as well as coaxial and optical digital audio outputs are fitted while the 9-in2 memory card reader swallows an extra format since it is now listed as 10-in-2.

The same 1980s Knightrider/Battlestar Galatica/Airwolf/Street Hawk styling remains and Yanks can invade shops and liberate then from shelves immediately for a relatively reasonable $999. The Samsung reps at CeBIT told me we could expect the BD-P1000 to ship in Europe for 999 euros which is a rather hefty mark up if true. Then again, what do they know? They said the player had a 9-in-2 card reader… sheesh.
