750GB Seagate HDD Appears

Lovers of technology are a demanding bunch. We simultaneously demand bigger capacities, smaller format factors, higher clock rates and lower power consumption. Today Seagate has delivered the first of these in spades.

Though not yet officially announced, details for the world’s largest 3.5in disc drive have appeared on the company’s website. The pdf document reveals a new top of the line Barracuda which uses perpendicular recording to hold a massive 750GB (a 50 per cent increase on the current industry max).

It is no slouch in the performance stakes either with a 7,200RPM spin speed, SATA II compatibility, 16MB cache buffer and claimed sustained data transfer speed of 78MBps (yes, that’s megabytes, not megabits). Operating shock is rated as 68Gs. Furthermore, living with the drive on a daily basis should be acoustic heaven and worry free with the company promoting its ‘whisper quiet’ operation and providing a five year warranty.

No release date or pricing have been revealed for this monster but it will be the flagship in a new series of drives all comprising the same tech specs – 8MB or 16MB cache is optional – and sporting 200, 250, 320, 400 and 500GB capacities. Given that we’ve waited nearly a year for a jump for 500GB this drive is certainly due and it begs the question: how long before we get our first 1TB hard drive?
