Much like D-Link and Netgear got sick of waiting for 802.11n to get finalised it appears that TDK is not overly amused with Sony continually slipping back its Blu-ray release dates so it has started shipping blanks anyway.

The company confirmed mass distribution of 25GB writeable and re-writeable discs to US retailers began today. Perhaps the real stunner here, however, is the RRP TDK has attached: $19.95 for a BD-R and $24.95 for a BD-RW. Given that Sony outlined guidelines of 25 and 30 euros (roughly $30 and $36.40 as of today’s exchange rates) TDK’s offerings will provide a significant saving.

Naturally, there is the small problem of there being no Blu-ray recorders available to write anything to these discs and no players available to access that data even if there were but let’s overlook this after the good news on pricing. On the bright side they’ll make for spectacularly expensive drinks coasters, Frisbees and retro earrings while we wait for Sony to get its ass in gear. Hopefully that will be before TDK launches its dual layer 50GB writeable and re-writeable discs later in the year. The anticipated price for those (brace yourself): $47.99 and $59.95….

Looking at the maths, for a single 50GB BD-RW disc you could get two spindles each containing 100 DVD-R discs which would provide over 900GB of storage. Scary thought.
