It may not be the first inline to provide this sort of technology, but being Sony everyone is going to buy it anyway so we might as well take a gander.

The proprietary obsessed company is releasing new CD-R and DVD-R printable media which – certainly from the supplied shots – looks a cut above the usual. Since Sony doesn’t make printers, it has also designed them to work with any ink jet or thermo based model that supports disc printing, which is nice.

Surprisingly, different technology is behind the two types of disc with Sony saying their slightly different formats require subtle changes to how the ink is applied. For DVD-R media AccuCore technology is used and advanced pthalocyanine dye (any chemists in the house?!) for CD-R. The intricacies of these utterly confuse me so until we have one or two in hand we’ll trust Sony’s claim that they both ensure “excellent durability and reliability with a high resistance to sunlight factor”.

Sony declined to offer an RRP for these discs allowing retailers to set their own prices. Have a hunt around the web and you’ll be able to find them now. Happy doodling….
