It seems the humble burner has reinvented itself in recent times. We’ve got drives which switch facias like mobile phones, drives which can inscribe labels directly onto specially designed media and now a model with built in AV capture.

LG is the clever company behind this latest innovation and it should take some of the pain out of piecing together homemade videos. Called the GSA-5169D, little on the outside gives away its extra functionality, but move to the back and owners will spot two RCA sockets, an S-video connector and a composite video port. There is also a telltale piece of software in the box dubbed ‘One Touch DVD’.

This capturing, editing and authoring software works in both Advanced and One Touch modes to suit both beginners and experts. The former gives complete control over every process, including format, quality, split points, video types, recording times and a whole batch of editing options such as rotate, zoom and transition. By contrast, One Touch works in a wizard mode with just two buttons (one for video recording, the second for DVD burning). Just slide in a blank disc, click the two buttons and off you go. Technically I guess that makes it ‘Two Touch’, but who’s counting?

Away from this, the drive hasn’t forgotten it is a high speed burner at its roots either with some nippy ratings. There’s 16x DVD-R and DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+R Dual Layer, 4x DVD-R Dual Layer and helpfully 5x DVD-RAM as well as 48x CD-R and CD-RW. The ubiquitous copies of Nero Express 6 and PowerDVD are present, while PowerProducer Gold and InCD finish off the package.

Aspiring documenters of family history will be able to tease and bore relations in equal measure for the price of Ł99.99 (incl. VAT) and can start doing so now.
