Iomega Joins Terrabyte Club

Maxtor did it back in October so it is about time Iomega became a fully fledged member. We’re talking about the TB club, of course.

Surprisingly we’re not talking tuberculosis either, but terabytes. One of them to be precise and its new 'Tera Series' is the kit that achieves it. Since we don’t yet have 1TB drives yet, manufacturers tend to combine a couple of 500GBers, not so Iomega which has gone down the quad 250GB route.

The results should be nippy however, with each drive spinning at 7,200RPM and featuring 8MB of cache. Connectivity is via FireWire 800 (adaptor included for FireWire 400) or USB2.0. It isn’t overly chunky at 31.8 x 16.3 x 20.3cm (L x W x H), but obviously to 500GB HDDs would’ve been smaller still. The XL Series can be configured as RAID 0 for backup and Iomega has chosen to go down the music, photos and videos route to illustrate its capacity despite that fact that rip rates and megapixels have rather a significant bearing on any figures quoted. For the record Iomega says 18,500 hours of music, 4,000,000 photos or 1,500 hours of video. Roughly enough to keep the average P2P fan in space for at least a week then…

Windows 2000, XP and Mac OS 10.1 and above are supported and it can be found on shop shelves now sucking entire memories from small children who walk past it. Spend £699.99 to save their little souls.
