Hynix Samples 512MB GDDR4 Chips

The reason computer technology moves so fast is because every sector is chock-a-block full of hard nosed competitors. Take the memory market and the latest announcement from Hynix (which is so busy it can’t even find the time to release decent size press photography).

It has just announced production of 512MB GDDR4 VRAM (video RAM) modules just over a month after Samsung lauded at breakthrough at 256MB. This is an important leap as it is now at the perfect size to fuel the next generation of flagship graphics cards. Yes, I know we just had the next generation, but that makes them the current generation and we’re looking to the future already. Remember, this is Computer World… keep up.

GDDR4 will bring some significant tricks to the party too, since it operates at an incredible 2.9Gbps and processes 11.6GB of data per second. This is nearly twice the clout of GDDR3 and when coupled with its reduced heat and energy requirements it should be perfect for the 64bit, dual core, Windows Vista era that will proliferate the market over the next 12 months.

Has Hynix celebrated its achievement? Errr… no. It is already waffling on about its plans to speed up GDDR4, saying it will develop stable speeds in excess of 14.4GB by the second half of 2006. Didn’t anyone tell the Korean giant it’s ok to take lunch once in a while?
