miniSD Reaches 2GB

As sure as the world turns, the wind blows and Graeme Souness gets sacked on an annual basis (what this space), flash memory cards expand at exponential rates. Also increasingly common is little guy Pretec’s ability to be at its forefront.

In July Pretec beat more recognised industry big guns to releasing the world’s first 4GB SD Card and now it has broken another barrier by upping miniSD to 2GB. Available now, this densely packed offering can store over two hours of high quality Mpeg4 video, making it ideal for the teeny mobiles which tend to take this format.

2GB also translates as roughly 500 tracks when encoded at 128kbps - about one third of what Riyad likes, but perfectly fine for the normal human beings ;) - and too many photos to wave a stick at (unless you start seriously upping the megapixels). Incidentally, don’t confuse miniSD (21.5 x 20 x 1.4mm) with microSD (11 x 15 x 1mm), it’s easily done.

Pretec is selling its 2GB miniSD cards directly and through resellers now. Only US retail prices are out and about so far, but at just $299 I’ll bet you it makes more sense to buy one at source and have it shipped over. That way it probably won’t arrive in time for the Bearded-Fat-Man-In-A-Red-Suit-Day, though…
