Coming under the category of “Useful-things-that-really-should’ve-been-done-before” is this flash drive from storage specialist Memorex.

It has had the simple, yet entirely practical, idea to shove an LCD display onto the side of a memory key. The 11 character indicator allows you to name the drive (useful should you own more than one) and helpfully shows how much space you have left. Importantly, because the drive takes a small charge off a computer when it is plugged in, the screen even works when not connected.

It does go down the computer fashion sheep road of using a blue LED, but we don’t care because it still looks cool and the fact that the drive’s cap fits onto the back of the device when in use is a neat design touch.

Memorex has chosen to christen this range the TravelDrive ID (for fairly obvious reasons) and it has been made immediately available in 512MB ($79.99), 1GB ($119) and 2GB ($199) sizes. It has also made me feel a little discontented with my own array of Flash drives.
