Plextor Cremates DL Burning Times

Until around six months ago it seemed every week one company or another was crowing about its latest record breaking DVD writers. Then the announcements stopped, vanishing without a trace. In fact, we haven’t even reviewed a drive since June due to lack of developments, but now Plextor has made us feel all warm and fuzzy inside with a new pacesetter.

The PX-760A and its Serial ATA version, the PX-760AS, break all boundaries with industry leading 18x DVD+/-R and 10x DVD+R Dual Layer burn speeds, while DVD-R DL rate equals the best we have seen at 6x.

In fact, the closest we’ve seen to Plextor’s flagship in our labs is NEC’s ND-3540A, which clocked in at very credible 16x for DVD +/- R and managed 8x and 6x for DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media respectively. Elsewhere the 760 drives match figures we’ve seen before with 8x DVD+ and 6x DVD- rewriting, 48x CD writing and 24x CD rewriting. The data buffer is 2MB.

White and black bezels are wisely available, since anyone looking to be right on the cutting edge is probably staying away from beige styling on their rig. Prices have yet to be announced, but both models will debut on 1 November. As for anyone I’ve offended who has in fact designed their breakneck box around the colour beige, you've brought it on yourself.
