M2: Yet Another MemoryStick Format

We need a further Memory Stick format like another hole in the head (which actually would be cool, if you think about it?!), but we’ve got one.

Clearly designed to compete with the increasingly popular microSD, “Memory Stick Micro”, or M2 as it is going to be known, is just 1.2mm thick, 15mm long and 12.5mm wide. This makes it just one quarter the size of a Memory Stick Duo card, and even teenier than microSD (20 x 20 x 1.2mm).

M2 has a zippy theoretical maximum transfer speed of 160Mbps, while the maximum capacity is also a theoretical 32GB. It will support 3.3V and 1.8V devices and hit the market in the first half of 2006.

Now while it is nice to see storage technology shrinking ever smaller (we passed the “lost-down-the-back-of-the-sofa” stage some time ago), it is frustrating to see another proprietary format shoved out. Sony has been surprisingly liberal recently, churning out mice and notebooks with SD card slots, but this wins it back the title it had begun to shed:
