About the time 2GB SD cards started turning up at the beginning of last month memory makers began banging on about 4GB: “We’re just about to…”, “Coming Soon”, “Almost ready” and yet when it comes to the crunch a company you’ve probably never heard of beat them all to it.

US business Pretec is gold medallist today and perhaps most impressive is the news that whilst breaking the latest capacity barrier it has also managed to make the card extremely fast. Officially speed rated at 133x, it manages transfer rates of up to 20MBps.

The Pretec card is also good for data writing/erasing over 100,000 times and it weighs next to nothing at 2g. It confirms to the SD 1.1 spec and was made using 65 nanometre 16Gbit SLC NAND chips.

Online pricing is still currently in dollars, but if you want to take advantage of the top notch exchange rates at the moment you might want to get it shipped direct from our former colony where will lighten your wallet to the tune of $699 (around £350). Could’ve been more…
