2GB microSD On Way

SanDisk, makers and designers of every flash memory format under the sun (and possibly a few more hidden under mountains and very small rocks) has announced it will be upping the sizes of its teeniest and most groundbreaking media: microSD.

Originally called TransFlash, microSD got the name change when it was officially adopted by the SD Card Association back in March and it has already been supported by a number of mobile phones. Today’s news sees its daddy announce it will grow up to 1GB before the end of the year and accelerate to 2GB in 2006.

Given that smaller is invariably better in IT, microSD is clearly going to be the flash memory format to have over the next 18 months. And with mobile phones set to take further stratospheric leaps forward in terms of photo and video quality during that time, the hunger for additional storage is going to be greater than ever.

There’s no word on how much SanDisk expects these new cards to retail for just yet, but you can snap up a 256MB version now for under £20 online, while the previously announced 512MB variant steps out into the big wide world in August priced around £40.

Anyone companies out there want to invent a thumbnail sized MP3 player with a microSD slot? Now that would be cool!
