Ricoh's Printable Dual Layer DVDs

This is an interesting one for all you creative types. Ricoh, manufacturer of just about everything, has produced the first inkjet printable DVD+R dual layer discs.

Now, obviously, you can’t feed these through a standard printer (if anyone manages to bend one around the insides of theirs let me know and we’ll get you a prize, like say… a replacement printer!), but they are designed to work with models that have tray feeds (like the Epson R800 below).

A new material used in the surface coating is responsible for the breakthrough (past industry attempts had floundered because other coatings made the already chunky discs too thick to work in the majority of DVD drives). Now you can illustrate until you’re heart’s content (and I have no doubt P2P aficionados’ the heart rates are soaring as a wicked glint grows in their eyes).

Given the new printing surface, it is refreshing to see the discs don’t look to be hindered in the speed department, writing at a reasonably nippy 2.4x. Pricing has yet to be set, but they will be available by the end of this month in 10 disc spindles.

Ultimately this development looks likely to leave label makers up a certain creek lacking a specific form of propulsion device.
