What’s 350 grams, stunning and embarrassed to hang around your dusty, old PC? No, it’s not Kate Moss; it’s the latest external DVD writer from Asus.

Slightly less sexy is the name: the SDRW-0804P-D, but we’ll ignore that and call it “Jessica” for the rest of the article because it seems more suitable. Unlike your average catwalk model, there is no lack of substance to Jessica either, with write speeds of 8x DVD+/-R, 2.4x DVD+R (Dual Layer), 4x DVD+/-RW and 24x CD-RW.

Jessica also supports Asus’ own burning performance and buffer underrun prevention technology: FlextraSpeed and FlextraLink. Naturally, given the quoted write and re-writes speeds, she is also USB2.0 and IEEE1394 compatible.

Now we know Jessica has substance, let’s get back to those superficialities we all love. At just 18.7mm thick, she’s slimmer than most mobile phones so transportation will be a doddle, the speeds are engraved into the top of the drive (see below) as is an indented CD/DVD pattern which is to scale. They're a little like tattoos methinks. Elsewhere styling is kept to a minimum, with just an eject button and small activity light added to the facia.

UK street price for Jessica is a not altogether insignificant £90 excluding VAT, but you get to keep her all night, all week, all month... in fact forever. She’s looking for suitable partners right now.
