Let’s all hop on the Blu-ray juggernaut. The next generation video and audio technology has gained some notable backers in recent weeks, but if it is truly going to be truly successful its going to need blank media, so right on cue up pops Verbatim.

The hugely popular storage disc manufacturer has announced its support for the Apple, Dell, HP, Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK, Thomson, Twentieth Century Fox and Walt Disney (gasp!) backed format in both single and dual layer capacities. It has also joined the BDA (Blu-ray Association) as a contributor (I would guess this means while it is officially licensed to produce Blu-ray media, it is not excluded from releasing rival format HD DVDs in the future).

In accordance with the Blu-ray standard, Verbatim confirmed media will be available in 25GB (single layer) and 50GB (double layer) capacities (we assume the 23GB size listed on the packaging relates to the size once formatted).

Obviously, the primary use for Blu-ray blanks will be to record data consuming high definition video but in practice the monster discs can be used for anything, including the back up of data (where they will no doubt prove popular).

Clearly at this stage there is no word on pricing but like all new media I would expect it to be at a premium on release then dropping quickly like we saw with DVD. Verbatim Blu-ray discs will begin shipping “late this year” to coincide with the first Blu-ray drives and recorders.
