Laptops are catching desktops in just about every respect, but they still lag behind in storage capacity. Making the latest push to correct this is Fujitsu, it has just announced the world’s largest 2.5in notebook drive.

At 120GB the HDD will be the flagship in the company’s new MHV2120AT range (catchy) and offers a 20 per cent increase on the previous record of 100GB. It will spin at a respectable, if not earth shattering 4,200rpm (you can’t expect the largest drives to be the fastest straight off the bat) but it does carry a chunky 8MB buffer while a mean seek time of 12ms is not too shabby. The drive should be pretty quiet with an idle noise of 25dB and it is not power hungry either, consuming less than 1.6W.

For clumsy among us, the series has shock resistance stood at 300G during operation and 900G when not in use, enough for a hefty bump but I wouldn’t suggest using it to play fetch with the dog.

How will it affect the portability of your notebook? Well, it weighs just under 100g so it is hardly on a monster, while its dimensions are reasonably typical of 2.5in drives at 70 x 100 x 95mm.

Should you be interested in something smaller, or just be working to a budget, the MHV2120AT series will also carry drives with 40, 60, 80 and 100GB capacities which all come with three year warranties. Fujitsu kept shtum on pricing.

Expect there to be plenty of competition from the likes of Toshiba and Seagate by the time this drive makes it to market in May.
