The wonderful thing about the computer industry is that once a breakthrough is made it seems like everybody else was just moments behind them. No sooner have we given NEC an Editor’s Choice award today, than all round PC manufacturing maestro Asus is announcing its own 16x DVD+/-R drive with incredible 6x DVD+/-R Dual Layer burning.

Of course, sheer performance is not always enough, durability and reliability are also vital to a successful product and the NEC ND-3520A has these qualities in abundance. It does seem, however, that being King of the Hill in IT these days comes with a shorter reign than ever. So let’s flush out the rest of the specs from Asus’ new speedster.

Of course, the 6x Dual Layer performance of the DRW-1608P is what really cuts the mustard but elsewhere there appears to be no shortcuts with 16x DVD+/-R, 8x DVD+RW and 6x DVD-RW. For those of you still burning a lot of CDs, the DRW-1608P will handle them at 40x CD-R and 24x CD-RW.

As you can see the DRW-1608P will be available with either a black or white facia and certainly looks like a first class product. Retail pricing has been announced as £49 excluding VAT and it will be released later this month. As always, you can expect to have a full review soon.
