Kingston Announces RS-MMC and miniSD Cards

Kingston, the memory manufacturer, has announced the release of new cards based on the Reduced-Size MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC) and mini Secure Digital (miniSD) formats. The new cards are slated for use in future digital cameras and mobile phones.

“Currently there are a handful of devices that take advantage of RS-MMC and miniSD cards, but we expect these technologies to become widely used over the next 18 months,” says Thomas Marschner, Vice President, Sales and Marketing Europe, Kingston Technology.

Sony has had a reduced sized version of its Memory Stick available for some time called the Memory Stick Duo, used in devices such as the P910. However, it has proved less popular as it tends to be more expensive and offer less capacity than its physically larger brother, an issue which could well afflict the new RS-MMC and miniSD cards. The new cards will ship with an adaptor, enabling them to be used as full sized cards.

Recommended prices for a RS-MMC card excluding VAT will be £11 for a 64MB version and only £12 for 128MB. miniSD will cost £13 for 128MB and £20 for a 256MB card. Conversely full size SD cards are available up to 2GB for around £170 online, while 1GB cards are widely available and can be picked up for as little as £53.
