Western Digital has announced that the new additions to its hard drive range not only offer greater capacity but also run significantly cooler. The Caviar range of hard disks are now available up to 320GB in capacity. They boast lower power consumption than Western Digital’s previous drives through use of WDs own WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technologies. Following testing in its Functional Integrity Testing Lab, WD claims that the drives run cooler than competitor products. Cooler running drives are increasingly important for use in small form factor and media PCs or computers with multiple drives.

The drives spin at 7,200rpm and are be available in EIDE and SATA interfaces. the new family of drives will include both 2MB and 8Mb models, and also include WD’s Data Lifeguard embedded error detection and repair features, which automatically detect, isolate and repair problem areas that may develop over the extended use of the hard drive. The drives are also available in capacities of 40, 80, 120, 160, 200 and 250 GB, while the WD Caviar SE 320GB drives will be available at retail stores next month.
