Toshiba announced today that it has added two new hard disk drives to its line up, one of which is the highest capacity 1.8in drive in the world. The ‘MK6006GAH’ offers a 60GB of capacity, the most yet for such a small drive. Meanwhile, the 30GB ‘MK300GAL’ is now only 5mm thick. The 60GB drive consists of two platters, while the 30GB drive makes do with one. The drives spin at 4,200rpm and feature a 2MB memory buffer. Seek times average at 15ms.

Toshiba provides the 1.8in drives used by Apple in its hugely successful iPod audio players. Prior to Toshiba’s official announcement of the new drives, a Product Manager at Toshiba was reported to have leaked that Apple has committed itself to buying the drive. This makes it seem highly likely that Apple’s recently released fourth generation iPod line up will be refreshed at some point in the near future, with the current 20GB and 40GB drive replaced by 30GB and 60GB versions. Apple was inevitably none too pleased at the leak, as it is likely to affect sales of the new iPod in the short term, as people hang on for the larger capacities.
