Does the thing have a contacts and calendar function to sync via the wifi to google?

My old dad does not want to use a smartphone and still hankers after a replacement to his trusty palm V.

Sony championing open standards? Surely somebody at Sony Corp has been sacked over this!

Well it's books, not movies or music. Sony haven't really stuck there nose into that part yet. But I understand were your coming from, I've not been a fan of Sony since they got into the Music & Film industry.

Thanks guys. This is a useful preview. The multilingual dictionaries are a useful touch. If your final verdict is as positive, I'll probably be getting one. I'll be particularly interested in seeing what they've done about the page turns - rumour was that they were going to finesse that a bit.

The advantages over the Kindle in my book (heh) are that the Reader just seems to do a better job at displaying PDFs with graphics, and that it's a relatively easy job to hack it to install additional fonts (to support e.g. polytonic Greek). It's also nice to not be tied to an Amazon future for ever and ever.
