When it comes to the price Roxio has the edge between the two apps. At Amazon.co.uk it comes in at £35.97 for the full boxed version, with some vendors selling it for as little as £28.99. That's considerably less than the weighty £59.99 RRP, or the $99.99 (about £49) downloadable version, and the boxed version comes with a detailed, and well-organised manual.

Both Nero and EMC come with gadgets for Vista.

The boxed version of Nero on the other hand, costs £48.49 new from Amazon, with vendors selling for £42.49. The downloadable version, direct from Nero's site is available for € 59.99 (about £43).

Verdict

Nero 8 and Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 both contain all the applications required to create, convert, rip and burn every type of media imaginable. However Roxio has missed a trick by neglecting to provide support for emerging High-Def formats, like Blu-Ray, although this is reflected in the price of the suite.

Roxio also holds the users hand, and simplifies every part of the creation process, whereas Nero's interface seems like a ticked feature box in comparison. That's not a big deal, though because underneath it lies a wide range of highly customisable applications, which aren't afraid to let you get a user configure them exactly how they want. And as long as you know what you're doing impressive results can be achieved.

If you aren't interested in knowing exactly what encoding format you are going to use for your devices, and just want things to work first time, then Roxio is the perfect application. If you need High-Def support, and don't mind fine-tuning the odd application, then Nero is the only choice. As long as you're aware of this, whichever suite you choose, you're unlikely to be disappointed.
