Nokia may not have been knocking our socks off with its recent handsets, but apparently someone who is has quite a lot to answer for...

The Finns have gone public with a lawsuit it is filing against Apple for what it claims are 10 patent infringements covering speech coding, wireless data, security and encryption. It has pulled out its dictionary of fightin' words too lambasting Apple for "trying to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation".

"The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for," said Nokia VP of legal and intellectual property Ilkka Rahnasto. "Apple is also expected to follow this principle."

Nokia alleges that over 40 fellow mobile tech companies comply with these terms and the IP was developed at a cost of 40bn euros (£36bn). The news comes on the back of Nokia's stuttering Q3 financial results, some of which are blamed on a loss of market share to Apple in the high-end, wide margin smartphone sector.

Expect a compromise to be reached many months down the line.

In related (and somewhat ironic) news constant Apple legal target Psystar has continued to defy the Cupertino giant's legal attempts to bring it down and announced a $50 application which allows PCs to run Mac OS X. Of course hackers have long been able to do this themselves, but the 'Rebel EFI' software brings that ability to the masses.

Apple won't be happy... x2.
