It annoys me when I see people using IE lol. Really geeky thing to say but it does, I use opera but toy with firefox now and again. Hell even my parents dont use IE

@Runadumb: You're giving geeks a bad name, that's intolerence not geekiness. Firefox may suit you and your familily but it's merely more suited to you then IE, not instrinsically better than it.

@Runadumb : worked in the IT industry for 22 years now - first cut my teeth on the web with Mosaic and AIX - and the one thing it's tought me is if it's simple and just works people will use it. IE is simple and works - I know there are all sorts of plugins and stuff for all the browsers - but for the majority of the world we want something to click on that will reliably open a webpage - and we don't care what it's called or what whizzy extensions we can get for it.

yes I'll stand up and be counted - IE is really ok - just like firefox and chrome and opera - we don't use all the twiddly bits - and couldnt care less about them

( the geek in me would like to see google chrome giving microsoft a swift kick in the bank account though ;) )

I hope MS don't can IE because in the hankcave it shits on the fox. Opera FTW :)

Actually the ballot screen will be bad fro firefox because the average user now sees Google as the internet itself, thus Google Chrome will be immidiately more recognisable to them. Google will take the title from Firefox.

At least the web isn't being designed for one browser owned by one company anymore. The standards-based web is flourishing now, thanks to competition and changing attitudes. Even if competing browsers can't increase their market share much more I don't think that really matters, so long as they've got enough share to justify their existence.

I'm actually loving Safari on Mac and Windows these days, lol, but I'm aware that I'm in a minority.

@Castalan: Agree 100%. I use FireFox, but only went to it a several years ago because of Tabbed browsing (seems old hat now though). I don't have any extensions installed at all. Used to have a couple, but got fed up of them not working most times I upgraded so I don't bother anymore.

However, the rise of other browsers is good for everyone as it forced M$ to update IE, make it more standards compliant, etc, etc. As long as one doesn't win overall, then that is a healthy place to be for us all. I certainly wouldn't want Chrome to become dominant - not because I dislike the browser or anything. Just that it would be as bad as when M$ had 90+% of the market. (And I am becoming more and more cynical of Google - but that could just me being a paranoid old git ;-) )

Like you say, the vast majority of people really don't care about the browser - they just want to use browser web sites.

@Runadumb: Comments like that really annoy me ;-) It is like an audiophile saying they get really annoyed when they see someone listening to an iPod (and with standard headphones). They use IE because: they don't know any better; don't care; or just have more important things to worry about in life! (or they have a life even, lol) It is a means to an end, that's it!

comment Guigsy said on 1st August 2009

It was annoying when people were still using IE when it was IE6 vs the rest. IE6 was so poor in terms of safety and reliability. Firefox deserved to gain market share to oust IE that had something like a 90% market share and no innovations for years.

Now MS is competing and they've produced a comparable browser, I don't have a problem with people using IE8. I use Firefox (and have done since Phoenix v0.8), but now I use it because I'm familiar with it and I can sync bookmarks across my Linux box, Windows box and Portable Firefox on a USB stick. There are pros and cons to each browser now, but there's no clear cut winner, lets keep it that way.

the question is,is it 1 billion unique downloads? if not then hell ive downloaded it about 100 times over the years.xp to vista to xp to windows 7 every 6 months on 5 machines adds up

comment Prem said on 1st August 2009

Downloads? Unique downloads? Doesn't really matter. This is an impressive achievement.

Been using Firefox since day 1. Always kept IE as a backup for difficult sites. Now, I cannot remember when I last used IE. Also dabbled in Chrome, Safari and Opera, but stuck with Firefox. Yes, it really is that good.

I've checked the little banner on the right of www.onebillionplusyou.com to see the different messages for Firefox (you rock), Chrome, Opera (both why use good when you can have awesome) and IE (comparing it to a VCR!), can anyone tell me what it says for safari or any others I forgot?

comment Tony Walker said on 2nd August 2009

Conmpany IT (PC) departments are only using IE because they haven't got the wit to use anything better. I've worked in IT (Mainframes) for 20 years.

My first browser was IBM's on OS/2 Warp and I still reckon it was the best. They were my first ISP too (1994/1995).

Use Firefox now (and Safari on my Mac) and the Mozilla browser before it. Prior to that on Windows I was a Netscape man. There was a short spell between Netscape and discovering Mozilla where I used IE - and did not enjoy it one bit!

@Castalan - With IE I ran into as many problems on sites as I have done with Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape.
