So today's the day your iPhone stops being mocked by rivals for its lack of basic functionality...

iPhone OS 3.0 touches down today folks and from this point onwards copy & paste (or 'cut, copy & paste' as Apple likes to call it) will no longer be an embarrassing deficiency (you'll get undo and redo as well, oooh). On top of this are the likes of MMS, SMS forwarding, email and calendar search (across the server too) and mobile Spotlight for searching handset content.

Other nifty additions include turn-by-turn GPS directions, the ability to jump back 30 seconds on podcasts and audiobooks, full Bluetooth pairing, A2DP support (on the iPhone 3G only), native multiple calendar support, multiple image emailing, notes synchronisation, a native microphone recording app, automatic form filling in the Safari browser, YouTube account support, in-app purchasing, app push notification and much more.

What can still be grumbled about are no video recording (that's only on the iPhone 3G S) and no Flash support while iPod touch owners continue to be treated like second class citizens with a $9.95 upgrade cost. There is also the O2 tariff debacle and horrendous tethering costs.

iPhone OS 3.0 is expected to go live via iTunes between 5pm and 7pm GMT so expect it any minute. On the other hand the gold master leaked to torrents last week, so I suspect many of you - like I - have been running it for quite some time already...

Update: It's officially out now.

In related news The Dev-Team has already unlocked firmware 3.0 and posted a video. Let the latest game of cat and mouse begin...

Keith: its funny how you berate microsoft for charging extra for something that should be free and excuse apple and instead turn on the user for not paying up. How old are you?
