Headline says it all...

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft's senior Windows vice president Bill Veghte has finally stepped forward to admit: "We feel confident that we will deliver Windows 7 with our partners on Oct. 22."

The eagle eyed will notice the date is merely 24 hours earlier than that given by Acer UK MD Bobby Watkins who stated in May: "23rd October is the date the Windows 7 will be available. There is a 30 day upgrade time so that customers don't wait to buy a new computer, so if you buy during that 30 day period, you'll get a free upgrade to Windows 7."

In fact Acer could still be spot on as European President Massimo D'Angelo explained "We won't be actually selling it a day before the 23rd October" - which would account for last minute logistical challenges. Unlike Vista's infamously delayed launch Windows 7 has had a stunningly smooth testing period so don't expect the day to move much.

So there you have it: four months, three weeks and counting.

In related news Microsoft's Murray Vince has confirmed that Windows 7 will feature native support for GPU accelerated video transcoding. It comes as part of the DirectX Compute API and will allow smart dragging and dropping of content between different devices. "DirectX Compute is the most important API in Windows 7," admitted Vice.

In yet more related news Microsoft has announced a mobile edition of the Bing search engine. Mobile users simply surf to [linkout:m.bing.com m.bing.com]. Microsoft confirmed to us at the time of launch that Bing will be integrated into its Windows Mobile OS in the future.

For those looking to directly test Bing against Google, you'll be impressed by this clever piece of coding by Furia which uses frames and a single search box to bring up results on both engines simultaneously. Clever stuff.
