With Microsoft Office 2003 mainstream support ending and Office 14 not coming until 2010 it looks like we'll be stuck with Office 2007 for some time yet. So at least Microsoft is showing it TLC...

Today sees the love it/hate it suite (I rather love it surprisingly - Outlook aside) bolstered by the release of Service Pack 2 which brings a number of tidy additions. Highlights include support for Adobe PDF, Open XML and ODF (Open Document Format) file types, security tweaks and some noticeable performance boosts such as 35 per cent faster overall Outlook operation with large mailboxes (it would be hard to be slower).

Happily the release is also on time as Microsoft had previously claimed the Office SP2 launch would happen in April (made it with 24 hours to spare!). So head on over to Windows Update to grab it now (cautious types can wait until it is automatically delivered to you in a few months).

In related news Microsoft has also unveiled some official shots of Office 14. These slipped by largely unnoticed (and completely skipped by me) a couple of weeks back - so if you're aching to see what spreadsheets will look like in 2010 dive in.
