We all know 'Web 2.0' outfits are desperately trying to monetise themselves but can anyone really see this taking off?

VenureBeat has managed to snag details of a nutty new scheme from Facebook which is testing out whether its users would be prepared to reward friends' status updates, links and other items. The system is called 'Credits' with users able to purchase 100 credits for $1 and then dish them out as they see fit when they find something particularly enjoyable.

As it stands currently, a test version of the site sees a credits section added to comment boxes with the option of leaving a specific amount to the poster. Credits earned can then be bestowed on someone else or used to purchase virtual gifts. At present it seems unlikely there will be any way to bank received credits but it would seem logical that they could be extended to any online store plans such as music or video downloads.

Naturally, while bringing in the cash is an increasingly important factor to Facebook the move must also be seen as a way to entice users away from Twitter to a scheme where they can be 'paid' for their hard earned witticisms. After all, if you're losing members through controversial redesigns there may be little other option than to buy them back...
